Design Anthropology by Co-Becoming

The chapter explores issues of algorithmic bias with machine-learning algorithms and discusses why traditional participatory design methods, including existing conceptions of design anthropology, are insufficient for addressing the issues. To address the problem, it argues that we need to reimagine design anthropology as a practice by co-becoming so that we can begin to think of the discipline and the act of algorithmic design from a new perspective that goes beyond the traditional conceptions of participation. Approaching design anthropology as a practice by co-becoming will allow us to design for radically new forms of engagement in which the stakeholders have the autonomy to shape the emergent nature of the sociotechnical systems.
