Kasper Tang Vangkilde

Person

Kasper Tang Vangkilde serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Copenhagen and the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Business Anthropology since the start of 2023. His principal area of research focuses on the intersections of business, organizational, and design anthropology. Vangkilde aims to achieve two key objectives: to formulate new theoretical frameworks that address social and cultural dimensions within corporations and organizations, and to augment the utility of anthropological methodologies in societal and business contexts.

His most recent research explores the concept of “life-enhancing design,” investigating the ways in which new practices and lifestyles can positively impact both human and non-human life. This research also examines the integration, or lack thereof, of sustainability and responsibility in private and public organizations, as well as in business operations.

In earlier scholarly pursuits, Vangkilde has conducted studies on a range of subjects, including creativity, branding, design, fashion, social innovation, future-making, and organizational structures. He has also applied anthropological methods in private-sector contexts. His academic contributions include serving as the Head of AnthroAnalysis from 2020 to 2022, co-editing the anthology “Design Anthropological Futures” published in 2016, and coordinating the “Innovation, Organization, and Work” track on the MSc in Anthropology program at Aarhus University. Additionally, Vangkilde has engaged in long-term fieldwork within an international fashion company.

Kasper Tang Vangkilde joined Matt Artz on the Anthropology in Business podcast to discuss his career as a business anthropologist. Kasper discusses the challenges of bridging the gap between academic anthropology and applied anthropology and the importance of breaking down the distinction between the two. He shares the changes he has seen in the field of business anthropology over the past 15 years, including the integration of design and anthropology. Kasper expands on that and highlights the value of design anthropology in studying and changing organizations. Finally, he discusses his new role as the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Business Anthropology and his current research project, RE-ANIMATE, which explores visionary designs for life-enhancing economies.
