Artmatcher

Organization

Artmatcher was a software company spun out of Cloudshadow Consulting in 2020 to develop a mobile application addressing access and inclusion issues in the art market. Built as a platform for artists, businesses, and art lovers, the application used algorithmic matching to connect creators with collectors and cultural audiences. The core premise held that the art market remained uneven, opaque, and historically exclusive, and that a well-designed technology platform could open new pathways for artists and collectors who had been underrepresented in traditional gallery and auction systems.

The product was built around the problem of inclusion. As Head of Product and User Experience at Artmatcher from 2021 to 2023, Matt Artz led the application’s product strategy and design research, with particular attention to how algorithmic recommendation systems shape access to cultural participation. Drawing on business anthropology and ethnographic methods, his work examined how category systems in art commerce reproduce bias and how thoughtful product design can begin to address it. The research he conducted at Artmatcher later informed his broader writing on algorithmic bias, professional identity, and public engagement.

Beyond his operational role, Matt was a co-founder of the company and helped shape Artmatcher’s product vision across its most active years of development. The position connected product management, user experience research, and applied anthropology in ways that reflected a commitment to designing for social good rather than for market optimization alone. He spoke about this work at the Why The World Needs Anthropologists conference in 2021, at the Global Business Anthropology Summit in 2023, and at the Anthropology as Business event organized through the American Anthropological Association.

Throughout its operation, Artmatcher was headquartered in Miami Beach, Florida and maintained a team of fewer than ten employees. As a Cloudshadow spin-out, its product was designed, built, and initially scaled by the parent firm before Artmatcher operated as an independent venture. The company was privately held and listed on Crunchbase, LinkedIn, Trustpilot, and Wikidata (Q110577510), where it was classified as a software company focused on the fine art industry. Its early Trustpilot reviews placed its rating at 4.3 out of 5. The company also produced a patent application for a Gamified Participatory Recommender System that used behavioral capital metrics to address fairness in art discovery.

In 2023, Matt transitioned from Artmatcher to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), where he leads enterprise AI research and product development initiatives.
